I don't think the information in the Active Listening videos contradict the netiquette article. I see both pieces of information as the two parts of communications (listening and responding). The listening videos provide information about the characteristics of a good listener - and you need those to be an effective mentor. As a mentor, we also have to respond to our mentees' messages and the videos gave us tips on verbal and nonverbal communication. The netiquettes are more about the kind of messages or format of the messages we can send, not necessarily to our mentees, but some points can apply (e.g., think about what you want to write ...).

After reading the netiquette article I think that it doesn’t contradict the listening tutorials. Indeed it shows one side of communication. The other side is the active listening tutorials.
I know that there are rules according to the channel of communication we’re using and of situation but some rules are in common (for example: to pay attention to the person who is speaking- to read all the messages; to take notes and check back – think before and after you write; etc.). It’s also true that some channels tell more about us than others (f2f adds non verbal communication, eye-contact that is not so easy to show in Virtual Environments, VEs, for example) even though today there are some advanced VEs that allow users to add gestures and body language details to the simple chat (text/voice). But this does not mean that artificial gestures show real emotions… this is only something that f2f communication can reveal. Anyway we should consider this as the speaker’s intention.
