I think a big issue around the mentor/mentee relationship is to find a way to create an open and ongoing dialog that emerges from a problem and purpose as seen in the eyes of the mentee. The mentor, then, guides the mentee to broaden personal connections so that the problem and purpose can be addressed. It's about the mentor reflecting on how the mentee can learn how to become more independent, then eventually more interdepedent. The big issue is how to create an environment such that others can see just what the mentee has to offer.

What are the big issues that arise, ESOL-wise- for mentees and their mentors? I think an issue that can affect the communication and relationship between a mentor and a mentee could be when they have different L1 backgrounds. Linguistic issues as well as sociocultural norms ruling communication can cause that the messages shared in the conversations are misunderstood.

Great chat with Angi Malderez. I have been reading different articles by her and her insights into the process of mentoring are great. Thanks for organizing this conversation.

I'd have like to join you in the chat, but it was too late for me (midnight) and today I had a hectic day. Hope the next time it will be earlier

Sorry, for not being on the scene for the last few days. I was travelling with access to Internet being very uncertain. I was also not able to chat with Angi, it being 3.30 hrs for me. I agree that Angi's insights into mentoring are profound but she makes them so lucid. I had occasion to hear her on mentorig at a SLELTA meet at Colom bo in 2000. That inspired me to take up mentoring.

Yuly, you have mentioned that the mentor and the mentee's belonging to different lingusitic background may affect the conversation between the two. It is possible that socio-cultural norms of either may get in the way. But I have had occasion to see some great mentoring happening in such cases as well- but in these cases the mentee had good fluency in English and was aware of the cultural norms of the mentor.
